How to make a Halloween Rag Wreath

Have you begun to decorate for Halloween, yet? I can hardly believe that Halloween is already upon us. As a part of the Walmart Moms, I was challenged to put together a Halloween craft. For me, doing a craft gets me excited about the upcoming holiday. I chose to do a festive, Halloween themed rag wreath. Have you ever made a rag wreath before? I think they are pretty easy to put together. I’m in love with the end result. This type of craft is super easy to customize for whatever theme, season, or holiday there is. A rag wreath is also a perfect way to decorate a door or entryway.

Before I could make my rag wreath, I first needed to gather my supplies. So with the giftcard provided I headed out to my local Walmart in search of what I needed. I’m so excited that this craft uses fabric as we just got fabric back in my local store after a little remodeling. I was very excited to check out what kind of fabric selection Walmart has. This craft doesn’t need many supplies, some of which one may already have in their home.

• 2 yards of fabric ($2.44-$2.97/yd.)
• 16″ Floral Foam Wreath ($6.97)
• Scissors
• wooden plaque (Halloween Bat- $1.27)

I chose two solid fabrics, purple and black, to make a striped pattern around my wreath but one can also use any other pattern, color, or style they choose. I got one yard of each color fabric. Another option would be to do a random selection of 4 different fabrics, however I would only use about half a yard each fabric. You need about 2 yards of fabric total for this craft.

To get started first prep your materials by cutting the 2 yards of fabric into 2-3 inch squares. Once all of the fabric is cut into squares then it is time for the fun part of assembling your wreath.

How to Assemble a Rag Wreath

1. Take one square of fabric, place the point of your dull pencil in the center and wrap the fabric around the end of the pencil.
2. Hold the fabric around the pencil as you carefully poke it into the foam floral wreath.
3. Let go of the fabric and remove the pencil.
4. The fabric should remain in the foam wreath.

To make the striped pattern, I roughly added 5 rows of about 10 fabric “pokes”. I didn’t count out the precise number, I just sort of eyeballed it and tried to make each stripe the same width all the way around the wreath. I did not poke any of the fabric on the back of the wreath as I wanted my wreath to lay flat up against the door when I hung it up.

Instead of making a striped pattern, another option would be to randomly poke 4 different fabrics all around the wreath.

To complete the wreath, I found this cute, glittery, wooden bat in the Halloween section of Walmart. I used the string that came with it and stapled it onto the back of my completed rag wreath. We have a bat theme this year for our Halloween decorations but one can use a simple wooden letter to represent an initial in someone’s name or wooden words.

I think this rag wreath is simply adorable. I am so proud of how it turned out. I’m sure this won’t be the last rag wreath that I make for our home.
